Real Estate By the Numbers

  • By: Jamie Reece, Managing Broker & Realtor on July 29th, 2011
  • Are you curious about how buyer’s and seller’s think?  Or, do you want to win a game of  Real Estate Trivial Pursuit?  If so, here are some real estate tidbits from The National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers that I found fascinating:

Average amount of time actively viewing online or in person: 12 weeks for first time buyers, 10 weeks for repeat buyers

Average homes viewed: 12 (same since 2009)

Number of Buyers that viewed homes online: 9 out of 10

Percentage that used the web for research before and during the home buying process: 74

How long the average buyer thinks about buying a home before making a move: 11 months

Percentage of FSBO sales where the homeowner already knew the buyer (friend/family/investor): 50%

The typical FSBO home sold for $140,000 compared to $199,300 for agent-assisted home sales. *National numbers

Single women accounted for 20% of recent homebuyers while single men accounted for 12%

Percentage of Buyers  (both first time and repeat) that rented a home or apartment just before buying: 49%

1 in 10 Buyers find the home they are going to purchase via signage or open house

The older you are, the more likely you are to contact a Realtor (hopefully us!) as your first move to investigate homes for sale – 16% for 18 to 24 year olds, 35% for 65 and older

Percentage of Buyers found their new home in a Real Estate Magazine or Home Book: 0%

63% of the time the seller paid the agent(s) commission.

10% of Buyers and Sellers did not know how their Realtor was compensated

91% of Buyers financed their home purchase
